Study Guides are Updated!

IRS Testing Sie is NOT open yet--Focus on learning & practicing right now. It is still early.
Choose How you want to learn:
  • Training Checklist on this site  tax lessons by topic with practice scenarios to try in the software for most lessons.
  • Link Learn Tax Training-IRS  IRS modules/slide show with interactive questions
  • Read PUB 4491 Volunteer Training Guide IRS VITA Training Guide-- same information as in the modules-just in PDF/book form
  • Or, VITA-Train modules from FPP Online lessons in PDF and Power Point format
Note: The tests are open book and untimed; there's no need to memorize everything. In real life, knowing how to look up information and ask questions is key. Familiarity will boost your confidence.
I created these tools to help you prepare accurate returns and become the best tax preparers you can be. If you have questions, feel free to reach out—I'm here to help. Have a great training season!

Study Guides for Basic & Advanced

Tip 1: Begin by answering all questions in your test book or on paper if you don’t have the book yet. Afterward, verify your answers using the tool below before entering them on the certification site.
Tip 2: Try to find answers on your own first to get familiar with PUB 4012. If you’re stuck, use the study guide—this is a learning experience, not just a test to pass quickly.
Tip 3: The study guide will reference specific pages in PUB 4012. You can access the book online using the link below. Utilize the find feature (<Ctrl><F>) to search for keywords or page numbers, or refer to the table of contents and index. Being aware of where information is located—such as income or credits—will expedite your access during real-life scenarios. It’s beneficial to becom

Check Your Work Below!

Once you have completed answering all the test questions in your book(or on paper), before you submit online on the IRS certification site, input your answers in these online forms to check your work. Feedback is given--if you get a question incorrect, it will guide you to the resource you should review. Remember, this is all about learning so we can do the best for our clients.
As always, if you find an error, have a suggestion, don't understand something, or need help, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] If Your answers don't match mine and you review yours and think I am wrong-- please email me. I might be wrong, let's discuss it. I am human after all and I do make mistakes--which is why Quality Reviewers are a MUST!

Tip: In Practice Lab, the Summary/Print screen is not always aligned correctly--it is best to click the icon above the summary page that says view/print return--then click the large button that says Print your return-- this PDF that generates shows all the schedules and forms and the values are where they should be.

Please note: I, Mary Meador, AM NOT a certified accountant or tax law expert. I volunteer with VITA providing free tax preparation for individuals and families whose income is less than $66,000 a year. We deal with simple returns at our sites.  I cannot guarantee the accuracy of all the information on this site as tax laws change and I may not have a clear understanding of complicated issues. I am trying to provide basic tax preparation information for our volunteers to get started--remember Publication 4012 is your go-to resource for questions, as well as irs.gov and Publication 17.  I hope you find this information useful and easy to understand. Thanks for being a VITA/TCE volunteer!
**I am human, so if you find a mistake, please let me know so I can fix it--we are all in this together**
