Getting a Social Security Number for J2 dependents **F2 ARE NOT ELIGIBLE** -- for International Teachers. Some of my INternational teachers have social security cards for their dependents, soem dont. Now, for the first 2 calendar years the teacehr is in the U.S. they cannot claim the child as a dependent--but if they plan to be in the U.S. a third year or longer-- the benefits of getting a Social Security Number (up to $2,200 child tax credit in TY2025 vs $500 Credit for Other Dependent if I get them an ITIN number is really worth it. There is a fee to do this I was told-and I have personally not done it--but one fo my teachers told me this is what she did to get Social Security cards for her children.
