Explain a return and its results to the client. It is good to practice this on your own. View the PDFs of the tax return and then view a video of how I explain it to the client. Practice and build your confidence, it will make it easier for when clients are with you in real life.
Review the PDF of the 1040 first, then listen to how I might review it--we all develop our own flow, but we do need to make sure we review the return and the client understands what they are signing and that they agree it is correct. |
This a recording of me explaining the Monroe return to the client

After I review it with the client I ask if they have any questions, if they don't I say something like:
"For me to efile this for you, I have to say 'Under the penalty of perjury, you have reviewed your return and to the best of your knowledge it is true, accurate, AND COMPLETE because you are the one who is ultimately responsible for your return, NOT ME. If you agree, sign here and I can e-file your return for you'"

Please note: I, Mary Meador, AM NOT a certified accountant or tax law expert. I volunteer with VITA providing free tax preparation for individuals and families whose income is less than $66,000 a year. We deal with simple returns at our sites. I cannot guarantee the accuracy of all the information on this site as tax laws change and I may not have a clear understanding of complicated issues. I am trying to provide basic tax preparation information for our volunteers to get started--remember Publication 4012 is your go-to resource for questions, as well as irs.gov and Publication 17. I hope you find this information useful and easy to understand. Thanks for being a VITA/TCE volunteer!
