2018 PRACTICE SCENARIOS

Scenario: Anderson (from 2018 NTTC Workbook)
Anderson – Interview Notes
  • Ronald retired from the Navy in 1980 after 20 years of service. He then worked in construction until 2003. Although the company he worked for did not have a retirement plan, he was able to fund IRAs for both himself and Marilyn.
  • They no longer have a mortgage but they did pay $2,987 in property tax last year. They also had some doctor and prescription co-pays totaling $987.43 and contributed $4,700 to their church.
  • They indicated they paid college expenses last year because they helped out their son’s family by paying $3,000 towards their granddaughter’s tuition. She is a junior pursuing her degree in accounting and has never been convicted of a crime.
  • They would like direct deposit if they are entitled to a refund or direct debit from their account if they have an amount due.
To think about: The Andersons said they heard there was a way that they could take advantage of their
charitable contribution to their church and ask if you know how.

Please note: I, Mary Meador, AM NOT a certified accountant or tax law expert. I volunteer with VITA providing free tax preparation for individuals and families whose income is less than $66,000 a year. We deal with simple returns at our sites.  I cannot guarantee the accuracy of all the information on this site as tax laws change and I may not have a clear understanding of complicated issues. I am trying to provide basic tax preparation information for our volunteers to get started--remember Publication 4012 is your go-to resource for questions, as well as irs.gov and Publication 17.
