Following Shared by M. Marinan--thank you!
Specific Credits we should be aware of: The major credits are the Homestead Property Tax Credit (HPTC) and Home Heating Credit (HHC), both of which are based on Total Household Resources (THR). THR, in short, is all income, including non-taxable income such as VA benefits and all SS (but not food stamps) minus medical insurance premiums.
Training/Resource:
Perhaps the best single folder (with subfolders) is the MI1 Anyone with a Link one. In particular, the "MI 4012" file (2023 MI 4012.pdf in the folder) is analogous to the federal 4012. It does include some screen shots from Taxslayer.
When asked "Is your state tax return so confusing we should avoid it at all costs and run away screaming or bury our head in the sand?"
The usual feedback from new volunteers who go through training (both Tax-Aide and VITA)...is "the federal part wasn't so bad but there are so many moving pieces to the state return...". The highly tax-adept might (or might not) be able to figure it out from the references in the linked folder, but it's probably asking too much of a new volunteer.
